Leveraging 4IR for VET in South Africa

Background and Objectives

The Skills Development for a Green Economy (SD4GE II) is implemented by the GIZ on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and together with its partners aimed to debunk some of the myths surrounding the 4th industrial revolution and to make digital transformation more tangible. Most importantly, the unconference presented an opportunity for diverse VET stakeholders to work jointly to shape the future of employment-orientated skills development rather than just talking about it.

The objectives of the interactive unconference on the future world of work and skills development were as follows:

  • Experience the revolutionary nature of disruptive technologies based on actual South African implementation experiences – rather than just talking about it!
  • Understand how this will impact future skills demands, the world of work and skills development initiatives.
  • Strategise how to bridge the gap between skills development & work for the different realities in South Africa.
  • Develop specific collaborative projects, to be implemented in the lead-up to the HRDC’s Skills Summit in May 2020.

The success of the unconference was due to highly engaged participation of the diverse sector stakeholders and numerous impulses for collaborative projects, the implementation of which is now under development.
